Sexy Laundry

Michele Riml
About the Show

Armed with a copy of "Sex for Dummies", Alice and Henry check themselves into a trendy spa hotel with a mission - to jump start their 25-year marriage. Time has taken its toll, so have kids, stress and gravity. In desperation, Alice has decided that they either make this final, major effort to save their marriage, or they get a divorce and go their separate ways. Can Henry embrace all the wild suggestions Alice keeps pulling from her handy-dandy marriage-saving manual? Does he really want to see his fifty-plus wife, and mother of his children, dressed in black leather?

Alice and Henry share their erotic fantasies, exchange recriminations, and take turns confessing the details of their mid-life crises as the play moves from comic to serious and back again. Henry and Alice's touching and hilarious rediscovery of themselves and the strength of their marriage will resonate with adult audiences of all ages. In turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, Sexy Laundry is a romantic comedy guaranteed to strike a chord.

Since its first performance at The Vancouver Fringe in 2002, Sexy Laundry has become one of Canada's most produced plays.  It was an overwhelming success and from 2003-2005, Sexy Laundry had three runs in Vancouver, BC at the Belfry Theatre and the Arts Club Theatre.

Since 2005, Sexy Laundry has gained incredible momentum.  It has been produced extensively across Canada by notable theatres such as Prairie Theatre Exchange (Winnipeg, MB), Shadow Theatre (Edmonton, AB), Globe Theatre (Regina, SK), Arts Court (Ottawa, ON), Neptune Theatre (Halifax, NS), Theatre Aquarius (Hamilton, ON), and the Grand Theatre (London, ON).

In 2008, Sexy Laundry had its US premiere with a run at the Hayworth Theatre (Los Angeles, CA) starring Frances Fisher as Alice.  The play returned to the US in 2009 with a successful run at the B-Street Theatre (Sacramento, CA).

In 2009, Sexy Laundry went on to play at other such notable theatres such as the Sudbury Theatre Centre (Sudbury, ON), B-Street Theatre (Sacramento, CA), and Arts Court (Ottawa, ON).

This success continued into 2010 and 2011, playing once more at prestigious theatres such as the Neptune Theatre (Halifax, NS), the Globe Theatre (Regina, SK), the Confederation Centre for the Arts (Charlottetown, PEI), the Gateway Theatre (Vancouver, BC), and the Mayfield Dinner Theatre (Edmonton, AB).  In addition, there are productions planned for Stage West Calgary in the fall of 2012 and at the Persephone Theatre (Saskatoon, SK) in the Spring of 2013.

After nearly 10 years, Sexy Laundry continues to play sold out shows across North America and the world.  In 2010, it had its Icelandic premiere and in 2013, it was presented in the French language in Quebec.  That same year it also premiered in Polish in major regional theatres throughout Poland.  Productions in Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and South Africa are currently in development.
