DorianAbout the Show
Dorian is a contemporary rock musical based on Oscar Wilde's classic story The Picture of Dorian Gray. Instead of following Wilde's story, however, which is set in Victorian England in the late 1800s, composer, Ted Dykstra, and lyricist, Steve Mayoff, have created a modern version that takes place between the 1960s and 1990s in North America. Dorian is an aspiring model with enormous talent and potential. Through a cruel twist of fate, his youthfully-exuberant wish for immortality is granted by changing places with a mesmerizing photo taken from one of his modeling sessions. While he stays the same, the picture changes with time. And he ends up paying the price. The eclectic music propels the show's narrative by reflecting the styles of these decades: from 60s' pop to 70s' disco to 80s' rap to 90s' grunge. Production History
Dorian was first workshopped in Toronto in 1987. While the presentation was received enthusiastically, it wasn't until 1995 that a professional recording of the songs was produced, courtesy of investor Steve Caswell. Again, the work sparked great interest and rave reviews and shortly after, a Broadway league producer obtained the rights to further develop the production. Steve and Ted recommenced work on a series of new songs and the full production was the focus of two additional workshops produced in 1996 and 1997. The production is still awaiting its world premiere... Of Dorian's 23 songs, 13 have been recorded in a first class studio with full production.
